Alert light on unit

This is a new drive. Benchmark unit is a DLT1. I rcv'd no instruction in reference to panel lights and so forth. I've assumed it needs cleaning. I've run the cleaning tape several times but the alert light is on continuously and will not go out. Does anyone have any ideas???? Thanks
