Since the drive conforms to the SCSI-2 standard,
and SCSI-2 driver is OK PROVIDED that it does
not do a SCSI INQUIRY and then check that the
mfr and model are on some list of "drives approved by Marketing".

I don't know much about WINDOWS DLLs and the COM
model of reusability, but if you can take the WIN ME tape backup DLL to a LINUX box, or have the Mortice Kern pkg of UNIX lookalikes for WIN
then you can use nm or strings to search for the list and patch it for the SONY SDT-5000.

Although SONY USA don't seem to know about the SDT-5000, SONY Europa, who are the mfr do. Their URL for the SDT-5000 is:-

www.sony-cp/_E/Products/Storage/DDS/SDT-5000.html

Sincerely

John Gabriel
