I have just tested the HP C1533a dat drive on Windows ME, without a driver using NOVABACKUP and ran a tape config program within NOVABACKUP and it worked perfectly. No Problems at all. I also backed up 1 meg of files with no problem. In device manager i still have my Dat drive there under the unkown device heading.
