I'm sorry to say, but dude, you're pretty much SOL there. About the only thing you could do is write your own software to access the tapes and read it block by block to an image file and maybe, just maybe, if it isn't compressed you might be able to reconstruct the files.

Since you have the first segement of the dataset and the last one you have the complete directory of the dataset, so finding the blocks won't be hard.

The snapped tape is probably no good, but once again you could write (of find someone) to write a routine to access the tape but if it's written in one long stream instead of blocks then I doubt you'll be sucessful.

I have an old Everex drive that I wrote a program for because I forgot the password to the tape, so I could access the tape header and the password (luckily) was not encrypted. Everex was not helpful in supplying me with specifications and commands so I had to reverse engineer thier software, you may have to do the same.

: I have an old QIC-80 backup that spans 8 tapes.
: The second tape has snapped. I fixed it, but
: the drive doesn't want to read it anymore.

: Now, I can't restore the data from tapes 3-8
: becaue the backup software (Microsoft Backup from
: Windows 98SE) insists on reading the header
: from each tape to to create a "temporary catalog".

: How can I simply extract the files from tapes 3-8?
: Without needing tape 2. Mind you, tape 1 is fine.

: Any help would be greatly appreciated.

: Thanks,
: Chris
