I've got the same DAT drive, and the same driver problem. Someone told me this Compaq drive actually is a HP OEM-product sold under the name HP C1533 (=C1539). I just had a look at http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hpc1533add9825&LC=information_storage&Tfile=lpg51258, and provided the SCSI settings are correct, it seems that a third-party tape back-up program might do the trick. I'm going to have a try, and I'll let you know the results.
