: The network I administer consists of multiple servers (with associated tape drives) and we rely on on-site staff to change the tapes of these drives on a daily basis.

: Unfortunately some of these people are not so reliable and we are running into problems with backups failing because tapes have not been replaced.

: I am trying to identify a suitable method for checking whether a tape inserted in a drive (DLT, DAT, SLR) but conducting this check from a central administration point.

: I currently use PC Anywhere or VNC to remotely connect to the systems, run the backup app and check this way - but this is becoming too time consuming and I am looking to automate.

: We run ARCserve on our NT Server products and Cheyenne Backup for Windows 95 on our Windows 95 "servers". All drives are SCSI based.

: Does anyone know of any "tricks" that I could implement to check whether a tape is inserted in the drive that could be used as part of batch files or whatever to automate this.

: Thanks

There's an API called ASPI (wnaspi32.dll) to interface SCSI devices. You can build a small app/service that runs in the background and monitors tape status. At I found some test app's, .lib & .h files that helped me build a SCSI test app. Works for both W9x & NT4/5.
