Though I'm SURE Microsoft techs will cringe at this, I thought I'd post this here for the THOUSANDS of us who Microsoft is annoying by not actually dealing with the QIC157 standard in Windows 2000.

***WARNING: Please note, Microsoft excluded support for all QIC drives due to issues with some QIC117 floppy controller drives with the Removable Storage Manager (see KB article Q217051) -- while we all know Microsoft SHOULD have just fixed the RSM, they apparently decided nobody cared about any type of QIC. Well, those of us with Travan 4 drives feel differently, but... ***

(Those of you with earlier versions of Windows probably don't need to edit the tape.inf file)

Open the file c:\winnt\inf\tape.inf with notepad. If you feel paranoid, make a backup copy of it first.

Go to the 27th & 28th lines which read:

> [ControlFlags]
> ExcludeFromSelect=*

Remove the "*" from the end of the line. This will allow tape drives to show up in the device selection list. Any QIC 157 drive can run from the "IDE (QIC157)" selection under "Standard Tape Drives".

Note: As far as I'm aware, all Travan 4 drives are QIC157 (the QIC IDE spec) -- EVEN the SCSI ones. Don't ask me why, just know that indeed the QIC157 driver seems to work for both IDE and SCSI models.
