Many users of HP's 5GB are plagued with the program freezing either during the backup or when it attempts to write the tape header. It'll run for hours then tell you it has another 999 hours to go. HP has their standard pacifier fix recommendations such as the new firmware, disabling this & that, etc. etc., all of which does work for a while or not at all. This problem happens randomly and even with new tapes. There is no common denominator, it locks on different tapes, different days & in different files. After a "freeze" the HP program takes about an hour to reload and I found it quicker to just re-install the darn thing.

I know it is not the drive itself, because I have bought new ones & HP even sent new ones after I made alotta noise! I suspect maybe something in a Win98 or motherboard IDE config.

Anyone else having this problem!? If so, what did you do to correct it!?
