I too have just found myself to be in a similar situation. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is and if you've managed to solve this problem yourself since the 21st feb tell me your solution. Now my situation seems to be a little more complicated since I can only install my XP over an existing OS. So I was installing a fresh installation over win98 and coverting to ntfs at the same time. During installation the PC would contiually crash for reasons unknown, and after restart the setup would continue. I thought as you did it might be sound related (as there was a yellow flag on that device) the sound is just on-board of a MSI MB. There was no flag on the simple com. device. After reinstalling as a FAT32 system, win Xp seemed OK. So I converted to NTFS. That's when all hell broke loose. The sound wasn't there and the flag for the simple com device came up and there was a problem with cdrom! I could only run in safe mode. So I've tried two things now and one of them seems to be working for now:
1 I put my HDD on a seperate IDE channel to my cdrom. (in case my liteon doesn't like my western digital HDD)
2 I installed WIN XP as FAT32, installed all my drivers for motherboard and sound and anythind else I could think of then converted to NTFS.

For now things seem good.
