Poor Sound after Installing CD-RW

I have a Windows 2000 machine with a DVD player. Until I added a CD-RW a few days ago, the sound quality was very good. Prior to that time, I had only a SONY DDU1621 DVD drive. The sound card, according to the Device Manager, is a Creative AudioPCI (ES1370), SB PCI 64/128 (WDM).

Now, after installing the Goldstar CD-RW, the sound quality has become extremely poor and most sounds are so scratchy that it's hard to even tell what they are. The Windows startup sound is just noise at this point.

Is there a conflict between the 2 CD players perhaps? Might it be a question of getting the latest drivers? Would this have something to do with the Secondary IDE channel and the sound card?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
