I don't think it has anything to do with a modem. I am running Windows XP in VMware 3.0 on Red Hat Linux 7.2 with no modem whatsoever, and I'm getting the same problem.

If anyone figures this one out, please post it.

: I am having the same problem. I heard that the problem is in the modem. Check to make sure your modem is compatible with windows xp. In device manager point the PCI simple communications driver update to your modem driver. This should correct the problem and install your modem.
