Reinstall your sound card. First boot into safe mode (hold down the CTRL button during bootup for WinME) and delete and sound card drivers it is using. Then reboot. It should find new hardware and tell you it is going to install the new drivers for it. Check what it is going to install and if it is the wrong drivers, do it manually. Otherwise let it do its thing. If it doesn't detect the hardware, run the New Hardware wizard and do it brute force. Make sure you have the drivers or you are wasting your time.

Boy, if I could just reinstall a new OS in my wife and get the same results ...

: No audio after restoring the system OS. Any clues?
