You need to reinstall your sound card driver. Writing Windows over itself is not a good practice. You can count on sound problems at the very least by doing that.

After your PCI mutimedia device is reinstalled go to Control Panel / Multimedia / and check the box for "Show volume control on the taskbar".

It should work properly after that.

If you know how to get into SAFE MODE, restart in SAFE MODE and go into Device Manager first and remove any audio drivers that might be present there BEFORE installing your PCI sound card driver again.

That is the best practice to use when removing old drivers for sound and video. Many times they do not show up in Windows but they are there in SAFE MODE and can cause problems.
