I have an Acer 640P and have XP and 98 on my PC.Tried XP and seems that it cannot detect my new scanner. Your problem is almost similar as mine and I have found the soluttion, although rather stupid idea :)

i) when scannning/previewing, it will go through a warm-up scanner process. CANCEL THAT PROCESS!.Ignore the next warning message. It works better without warming up because, for my situation, if allowed to warm-up, it will move the optical head to 1/4, stops there and will return that error message. Then I have to restart the scanner.
ii) Sometimes it requires restarting the scanner 1-2 times before u actually can scan a picture.Sometimes...

I just hope anyone out there can tell me how to disable that warm-up process. It's bugging the scanner.

: Hi there
: I have an Acer 640U scanner. It used to work under Windows 98 but now I have Windows 2000 Professional. Now everytime I try to scan something this message comes up: Read image data failure!
: Please restart the scanner.
: Code[2882:1118]

: If I restart the scnner, nothing changes.
: Does someone have a clue what to do? I'd like to be able to scan again!!!!!
: Cheers
