I posted a couple of years ago about making WinME and HP5p compatible. Yesterday I installed XP as I was under the impression it had a huge database of almost every known peripheral and everything would work. It didn't even recognize the HP PhotoSmart 1100 printer.
HP's site tells you the product is now unsupported but does offer a couple of work arounds. So here is what I did and it works fine.
First, do suggested workaround 1. Download DeskScan 2.9 and install it. IGNORE THE WARNING about how it might not work properly or will mess up your system. It will install properly, it will work properly and it will not mess up your system. Just click through the warning and install DeskScan 2.9. Don't run any tests. There is no need to remove the SCSI card. After you install it, you will need the Win2k driver that you can find at ftp://ftp.lsil.com/pub/symchips/scsi/drivers/53C416_Drivers/Win2k/416w2k.zip
This is a zip file. Extract it to some a file you create somewhere that you will easily remember.
After all is done. Reboot the system. The system will locate the SYM5143 (whatever) and look for the hardware for it. AGAIN - IGNORE THE WARNINGS THAT IT WILL MESS UP YOUR OS OR NOT WORK PROPERLY! It will be looking at DeskScan2.9 for most of the install. It already knows DeskScan2.9 is not compatible. Ignore the warnings!
It will tell you it cannot find the hardware. Point it to the file where you have placed the extracted Win2k files from the zip above. Remember, you must have already installed DeskScan 2.9 as well. It will finish the install based on the Win2k driver you point it to. It will then tell you it has found and installed your new hardware (ScanJet5p is what it will tell you it has found and installed). When completed, push the green button on the front of the scanner. If the DeskScan program starts - as it should - you're in business.
I pulled my hair out last night trying to make this work, first thing this morning I did it again, clicked through all warnings, pointed to the Win2k driver to complete the install and pushed the button when it told me my Scanjet 5p had been located and installed and was working correctly.
Off to buy a wig!
Please only email me if you need the zip file listed above if they remove it. I can't walk everybody through the install. I only know that it does work, it doesn't require the removal of any hardware, and is a whole lot easier than the fix to making 5p work with ME. :)
