: I need the driver for my UMAX Astra Scanner that will work with Windows XP

My guess is that you will probably have to follow this procedure for XP, like I will have to do with Windows 2000.... I have a 610P parallel port.

Installing UMAX Drivers in Windows NT 4.0

Not all applications installed.
Installed applications return errors when starting or when scanning.
Poor image quality.

Before installing UMAX scanner drivers under Windows NT 4, make sure the following is correct:

You MUST be logged on as "Administrator" to workstation, or have rights to "load and unload device drivers." If logging onto an NT network, you must have these rights verified from the System Administrator (SAM) of the domain into which you are logging.

If a third party SCSI card is being used (Adaptec, for example) install the appropriate drivers specific to that card, and verify the installation prior to proceeding.
Note: If you are using an Adaptec 1502 or 1505 SCSI interface card, you should use the Adaptec AIC-6X60 single-chip SCSI controller driver resident in Windows NT 4.0.

All programs must be closed prior to beginning the installation. This includes screen savers, anti-virus utilities, crash monitors, etc. Empty your recycle bin and protected files (if applicable.) Note: a protected file that is not deleted or placed in another file can generate "file-in-use" errors when installing common files.

If there are other twain-compliant programs installed, delete the twain directory prior to beginning the installation process. You will find the twain directory within the Windows directory.
Note: if you have any other twain devices you will need to reinstall their drivers when the scanner installation is complete.

Once everything is ready, use the UMAX CD to begin the installation:

Attach the scanner, and have it turned on and ready prior to booting Workstation.

To begin the installation, click on the "Start" button and choose "Run". Click on the "Browse" button and choose your CD ROM drive. Double click on the "Install" or "Setup" icon. Click "OK" to begin the installation procedure.

If dual booting, the driver must be installed in the same partition as the operating system used. VistaScan installs into the C:\ by default. Use custom installation for multiple boot configurations. Note: dual booting in the same partition is not supported.

If you are not going to use the scanner across a network, do not install the "Network Manager".
VistaScan and MagicScan may not load properly to NTFS compressed hard drives and we do not support our scanners on NTFS compressed drives.

When the installation is complete, restart your system.
