I had the same problem. I can tell you what I did. I don't know why it worked, but it did.

I happened to find my drive disk that came with the printer, the one that has the old drivers on it. I tried to install it with the disc, but that didn't work. Then I tried updating the driver from the disk, but that didn't work. Then I tried putting the old XP driver on again. Bingo, it worked.

So, to follow my steps exactly, here's what you do. I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me.

1. If you haven't already done so, try to install the XP driver for deskjet 400 (I assume you've already done this, or you wouldn't be looking for help.

2. Insert your original HP driver disk. It doesn't matter that it's a Windows 95 or Windows 98 disk. Just use it.

3. From Windows Explorer, try to run the setup routine on the driver disk. It will fail.

4. Use the "Run..." Window from the Start menu, and type in "a:
setup". Try to run that. That will fail also.

5. Now go to Control Panel..Printers. Select your HP 400 printer and right click.

6. Somewhere in properties (I'm at work now, and things are different here) you will be see a button labeled "Update driver."

7. Select Update Driver, tell it that you Have Disk, and try to get it to use the file on your disk. That will fail.

8. NOW.... try to update driver, and select the HP Deskjet 400 (Monochrome) from the XP list. Do not choose the one that does not say "Monochrome".

9. That should work. Print a test page to verify.

I know it sounds crazy, and I have no idea why this works, but this is the last thing I tried, and it works now.
