I've spent about 3 hours on this problem. As far as I can tell, the best anyone has been able to do is force the Windows 2000 driver to work. It works marginally only.

The biggest problem with this work-around is that changing the printer's properties doesn't do anything. Whether you change them or not, the print quality is poor with bands, as if in draft mode. This is fine for printing internet research and drafts, which I do a lot, but not acceptable for correspondence or final reports.

I used the Windows 2000 Driver version found on Canon Asia (Singapore) which had been suggested elsewhere in driver forums for this problem.

Perhaps Canon will change their mind, or a third party will develop a driver. Probably a lot of us would consider buying one.

My daughter has an older Win 98SE machine, and she'll be inheriting the 5100 soon . . .

For me, there is no good answers to this problem at present. Hopefully something will change in the future.
