Hello, all.

I have an application which needs to get the paper-out status of a printer, instantly in human-perception terms, while in Windows (Win2K, in particular). Since the test is to be sure the printer is "empty", and only complain to the operator if it's not, the system timeout and error-message popup's are a serious problem. I was told that a printer-driver exists which would allow me to do this. Back in the old days, I'd just use the device interrupts and some inline assember, but Windows is decidedly against this route. The printer control is embedded in the output, so 'generic' is fine, and possibly preferred. If only brand-names are known to you, it the Epson BA290/295 family.

Check printer Status with little or no system timeout
Get status report without triggering Windows Error Msg
Printer Control is in application, so generic driver is fine.
