[Note: in addition to your post here, could you also e-mail me your post (steve410@erols.com)? thanks!]

I have been using my Lexmark 4039 10-Plus (postscript) printer for a while now successfully from either windows 98 or linux. Yesterday, I installed the duplexer unit. The duplexer works, as I was able to connect the printer to my linux box and print an ASCII text file which printer on both sides (and the DUPLEX option is displayed on the printer screen, by the way).

I really plan to mostly use the printer on Win98 via parallel, and I'm using the Win98 SE2 Lexmark 4039 Plus PS driver that came with Win98 SE2. This is the same driver I've been using for a couple of years.

Here's problem 1. When I set the printer driver (in Win98) to having the Installed Option of duplex and save the changes, when I print, it doesn't print on both sides. Tried this a few times and verifid the driver was set for duplexing and that the printer had duplex displayed.

So, I decided I would install Lexmark's latest driver for this printer which I downloaded from th Lexmark site.

I've installed the software driver. Very weird. Now, anytime I reboot my Win98 PC, the printer now prints out two pages with garbage at the top left hand corner. What is happening here? But, I am still able to print to the printer with the new driver after Win98 is all loaded and ready to go...

However, the duplex option via Win98 still doesn't work... well, it can't work until I tell the new driver that the duplex option is installed.

So, I preceded to adjust the properties of the new Lexmark printer driver. Up comes the driver window with the various tabs. I can choose ANY of the tabs and move to that tab page... EXCEPT FOR THE FEATURES TAB. (Remember, this is your latest driver for Win98). When I click on the FEATURES tab, the window hangs. I've tried this repeatedly, and the systems says the driver properties are no longer responding, and I have to end the task. But only when I'm in the FEATURES tab. I'm assuming that's the tab where I would be setting duplex, etc.

What is happening? Why would it hang on only that tab? DETAILS, PS, and the other tabs work just fine. Just not the FEATURES tab. What happens internally when that tab is clicked? Does it actually go out to the printer to find installed features? Or does it just want the user to set the features on that tab manually? How can I get that working?

Is it possible that the new driver specifically requires a bi-directional printer cable? I'm not sure mine is. But the old driver (and it's properties program) worked just fine (except duplex) for all tabs in it with the current cable. I wasn't sure if the new driver requires two-way communication or it hangs. I'd be really surprised it it did require it since the old Lexmark driver did not. Oh, and from Linux, I could print TEXT-mode only with the same cable, so, I'm not convinced it's the directionality of the cable.

If that new driver is not working, I'd be happy to go back to Win98's built-in Lexmark 4039 Plus PS driver (the new one is called Lexmark 4039 Plus PS2... notice the PS2 and not PS like the old driver?)

But the old driver will not print duplex with duplex set in the driver. And remember, the printer itself is able to print duplex when a TEXT-only file is sent to it when it is connected to my linux box).

Please help. I'm so desperate to get this working. And it's been so frustrating. I'm both Win98 and Linux savvy, so I've done all the traditional troubleshooting. Right now I'm concentrating on getting it working via Win98, since that's where I'll use it most.

My e-mail is steve410@erols.com.

Thanks so much in advance for any help you can provide.
