This is a standard problem with the Canon C5000.
I have it too. No real fix, I have upgraded drivers, etc and you're right-the only workaround is to reboot. The only FIX is to buy a new printer.

Canon did some funky stuff with the printer driver too. It must be a 16 bit driver, because it does not respond well to things like printer sharing-hence the probelm in a network environment. It goes in, you see it in the queue and poof-its gone. Very annoying. There was talk of a linux driver-but that failed. I gues it is a WIN printer-and the developer probably quit.
I have trip the tips from Canon (which I might add were for a different printer) and to no avail. It really bits because I want to upgrade my machine to XP or 2K, and alas, my printer will not make the transition.
