This problem is referenced at Xerox web site. Here is their proposed solution:
1) Make sure that the printer is connected directly to the computer with an IEEE 1284 compliant parallel cable and that both ends are plugged in firmly.
2) Unplug the power to the printer, restart your computer, and then plug the power to the printer back in.
3) Uninstall and reinstall the printer driver
4) If you're running Windows 95, 98, or Me, check to see if you have an ECP printer port:

A. Right hand click on the My Computer icon and select properties.
B. Click on the Device Manager tab.
C. Scroll down until you see the 'Ports' section and click on the + to the left of it.
D. Look for the printer port, LPT1. If it says ECP try changing this in the BIOS of your computer to SPP or BiDirectional
