I assume you have the driver installed, the cheap program running, have downloaded music to the player and then unplugged the USB cable.

It took me several tries to get it working. The following seems to work:
1. Move the Hold-On-Off switch to the
Off position;
2. Move the Hold-On-Off switch to the
On position;
3. As soon as the 'On' message appears
on the screen, press the Play button.

Mine seems quite fusy about the music it plays and seems to jump a bit. I may take it back to the shop. I paid 30 for it. And you?
