I finally fixed it in XP
it turns out the driver was on the computer all the time you just have to point the installer at it. (this assumes you have installed the XP patch from the jamonline site first- don't try this till you've installed this patch)

go to the device manager with the camera attatched to the USB port - select the camera and go through the reinstall drivers wizard - ignore it when it says it is not XP campatible - the drivers were in my windows/sys32/driver and is called kbcam.sys (do a search first to establish it is indeed there)

it then installs and works OK - it does crash occasionally but it works mostly.
