: When I tried to run my sims game this EXACT message came up (i.e samre as Laura, etc.) This occurred on a Packard-Bell machine.

Asp4Wave is presumably part of the driver library for the sound card. Before hitting on this site, I had tried looking for a more recent driver (no luck there), re-installing (no difference) etc. etc.

On my machine there is an A3D demo which explores the possiblilites of the sound card (Aureal) and in particular its 3D capabilities. These demos include helicopters, bumble bees etc. One of the demos however, allows you to select a WAVE file to play..... Yes, the demo falls over in EXACTLY the same way (oops).

Disabling hardware acceleration (an option in the A3d Control Panel) resolves the problem for me. I still have stereo sound, but not 3D (but you can hardly tell the difference anyway).

So here is another solution that others may find useful - particularly as you only have to un-tick a box!
