Win 98 supports 4Gb of RAM although little over 256 Mb will ever be used. You need to check a couple of things, one that your RAM timings in BIOS are correct, and wether or not the error happens at the same time in the same software, fatals are CPU generated messages when a piece of software tries to access an illegal address, one already reserved by the system, the two cannot co-exist and the system falls over with the application, which is why its 'fatal'.
