For IRQ related problems or resource conflicts XP relies on your having the Advanced Power and Configuration turned 'on' in BIOS set up. You do have to have a complaint motherboard and BIOS. Have a look in the power management page of your BIOS and see if there is an option 'controlled by' see if you have an ACPI option, if so enable it. If not, and in any case go to the PCI setting page and make the resources controlled by 'auto' finally make reset configuration data, 'enabled'. save and exit you might just be lucky. The only thing that bothers me is that if the message is for' a simple communication device' that refers to an internal modem or AMR, if it was a sound card it would refer to it as 'A simple mutimedia device'.
Here's the rub' if it is an internal modem or especially if it's an Audio Modem Riser, then for the vast majority of devices XP wont support them. See if you can get any more info. posted and will check further.
