What you say works fine for Windows 2000. I did the same on my Toshiba laptop.
It won't work on XP though.

For XP, try this.

From Device Manager, select "Update driver".
Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".
Select "Network Adapters".
Select "Generic NE2000", and then "NE2000 Compatible PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter (Generic)".
When the warning appears, click "Yes".

You will then have to go to "Resources" and manually configure your IRQ & I/O settings.
Typically, IRQ 5 or 10 are free and I/O 0300 - 031f
