Windows 98 SE and my 3COM 3C589 aren't happy together

I am installing WIn98 SE on my ThinkPad 1451i, and I
have discovered that my 3C589 network card will cause
Windows to reboot if I do anything that involves passing
packets quickly: a ping will work, always--an FTP will
always cause the system to reboot.

I see no special warnings at 3com.com about this, nor
do I see anything weird at microsoft.com.

Can anyone help with this? Has anyone seen this?
