Pardon the intrusion. i'm randomly scouring the web looking for people who might be able to help with this strange problem. If you know how to resolve this issue, please drop me an email at, and thanks in advance.

i have two computers networked together via two 3Com 10/100 NICs, model # 3CR990-TX-95, and a 3Com 10/100 5-port hub. There is also a Cisco 678 DSL router connected to the Uplink port, through which both PCs access the Internet.

Recently, both NICs have begun sending intermitten data on a fairly constant basis (The activity light on the hub for that card flickers rapidly), regardless of the state of the computer they reside in, and regardless of whether there is anywhere for the data to go. If both computers are in soft-off mode, the cards will still access, even if they're the only device plugged into the hub. This occurs on both computers, and i have not been able to figure out why. The data access does NOT occur when the card is unplugged from the hub, but the link lights on the rear of the card turn off then anyway.

Even with this happenening, access over the network works okay, and the Internet access does not seem to be affected in any way. However, knowing that both cards are sending data for no reason irks me no end.

Has anyone else had this problem, or know a solution to fix it? Thanks again.
