I'm having the exact same problem. I have a sony pcg-fx215 laptop, which came preloaded with Windows ME. Same Conexant Ambit Softk56 modem. I had been connecting at 50K almost 100% of the time from this location. After installing Windows XP (with the appropriate modem driver update from sony) I've only been able to connect at 28.8, and once at 30.6. Very frustrating. I wouldn't send the laptop back to sony, I'd search (and am searching) for an alternate / generic driver for this modem under XP. Seems like everybody and their mother uses some variant of the conexant chipset to tailor a software modem, there must be another driver out there??? Keep me posted,

: My brand new laptop modem only connects at 28.8 THis location has been 49.3 for last 6 years with previous laptop (Lucent Winmodem)...phone line has hi-gain..so it's NOT that. Has anyone else had this problem, either with this Sony Vaio laptop...or, with same modem???
: Sony say's the latest XP driver is all they have....modem needs to be returned to be fixed.
: Before I send it back in (its only 3 days old), has anyone else experienced this problem?
