Serial Mouse drivers

At work we want to use a CKS trackball connected to a serial port on a PC running W2K. Now this trackball has 3 buttons, its own power supply and there is no handshaking. We had a company create 2 drivers (sermouse.sys) to get this trackball to work for NT. 1 for com1, the other for com2. This suggest hardcoding (?). Because no communication exists at startup, I am trying to determine how I can "trick" windows into detecting a mouse is present. I have no experience in this area and would appreciate any thoughts on how I can get this device to be detected.

Regards,
Scott.
