I think it works on capacitance. Just like the elevator call buttons that you barely touch and have no give but still work. I tries the same things and they didnt work. The paper or thin layer of plastic are OK because the capacitance "flows" through..
That is also why the darn thing wont work if your finger is dirty or you have lotion or the like on.

What I want to know is this: I've seen some that you can use a special stylus with. What are they made out of???
