: Want to put an old SeagateHDD into new machine. The old drive was used on a Windows for Workgroups machine; the new machine runs on Win 98. There is a HDD, FDD and CD on new machine, but only the flat cable from the CD has a free input slot half way along. When I put it there the machine can't see the CD or the second HDD. Ony need to copy across some documents and thought it would be quicker. Found jumper settings on old drive, but initially not set as per illustration. Do I need to set jumpers on primary and slave or just slave?

Each IDE port supports two (2) IDE devices. You indicate that you have ONE (1) HDD and ONE (1) CD. Your FDD controller (is NOT IDE) should support two (2) FDDs. You SHOULD have the capacity to add two (2) IDE devices to your PC. It sounds like you need a normal HDD cable for the primary IDE port if you want to install an IDE device on that port.

You should be able to get your old HDD working on the CD port. ONE (1) device on each port must be MASTER and one must be SLAVE. CMOS Setup should display how the CD is configured (is it master or slave?) - just set the HDD jumpers to the other choice. SOMETIMES there are compatibility issues - just unplug the CD power connector (temporarily), autodetect the old HDD and transfer the files - put the CD back after you're done.

Good Luck,
