I've never dealt with anything close to an 80GB, but I'm getting one for Christmas, so after a bit of research, here's how I'm going to partition mine:

Partition 1: 5GB for operating system (WinXP)
Partition 2: 40GB for programs and software
Partition 3: 35GB for documents, data, etc.

All partitions will be NTFS. If you go with FAT32, you may be limited to a max partition size of 32GB, although there seems to be some question about this in WinXP.

I'll also reformat my old 10GB as my second drive and put the Win swap file on that drive.

: This is by far the largest hd I've ever had and had wanted advice on the best way to partition it. Also, I've heard that partitioning a section off solely for swap files was a good idea but what exactly is a swap file and how do I do this if it is a good idea?

: Thank you for any information you can share.
