I would be very leery of any "driver" to support your 40GB HDD. I assume that your BIOS recognizes the FULL 40GB capacity of your HDD. IF your BIOS DOES NOT recognize the FULL CAPACITY of your HDD, STOP until you do have support for 40GB or larger HDDs. Post again if you need suggestions for getting large HDD support.

WinNT4 does not support FAT32, only FAT16 and NTFS. Do you plan to use FAT16 or NTFS? There are plusses and minuses for each. For practical purposes, logical damage to NTFS volumes/files may not be repairable at home - requires WinNT4 on another system or another bootable HDD on your system. Standard FAT16 volumes may be repairable with DOS6.22 tools (A Powerful PLUS in my book) IF you use normal size clusters (32KB MAX). If you use 64KB clusters you can have a bootable 4GB partition but you can't fix it with DOS tools - so if you use FAT16, stick with 32KB clusters and a WinNT4 partition of 2.1GB MAX and possibly a limit of 8.4GB TOTAL HDD capacity (3 more 2.1GB partitions).

I think WinNT4/NTFS can address 4GB in the bootable partition and the remainder of the drive in one or more extended partitions - IF the BIOS supports the HDD capacity. If you choose the NTFS route I suggest that you get a small HDD - up to 2.1GB - and install WinNT4 on it too; test it and store it in a SAFE place in case you need to recover files or fix your main HDD sometime in the future.

Hope this helps,
Henry
