: Hi,
: i am using 20G Maxtor hard disk. my problem is my hard disk is stop responding when i try to enter windows. my BIOS setup able to detect my hard disk but when i start my computer, this message keep appear 'Primary master hard disk fail'. nothing that i can do, eventhough i decided to format it, it does not happens and it will immediately restart. i have been using my hard disk for 10 months, and this is the first time it behave like this. therefore, i really need anyone opinion about this, and possible the solution. if possible i want to keep my data because it contains my final year project. Please....

You could be in trouble if you did not backup your data. If you format your HDD you will lose all of your data (data recovery is EXPENSIVE, DO NOT FORMAT YOUR DRIVE). If you did not backup your data, try to boot to a bootable floppy disk and if you can see your files back them up before you do anything else. If some of your files are too big for one floppy download a file splitter from the internet - you can copy long files to multiple diskettes.

DO NOT try to do diagnostics or HDD fix untli you have your files copied from the HDD. AFTER you have your files backed up download Maxtor's latest diagnostic utility from their web site (a slightly older version should be on your maxblast diskette). Run the diagnostic - see what it tells you.

Please post your hardware configuration - there may be some better options if you have a CD-RW or a zip drive or another HDD or ... and which windows version you are using.

BE CAREFUL and Good Luck,
Henry
