: After wiping free space (BCWipe by Jetico) and defragging, my formerly lean and mean hard drive space swelled up to almost 100% full! No new programs, just ran those two utilities and the mfgrs won't answer why. I am running WinME if that matters. Please send any replies to meanolgrouch@altavista.com.

: And I sure do hope this question qualifies for the forum! Thanks.

Sounds like you have a minor mess that can be fixed easily. IF BCWipe worked you would have NOTHING to defrag; if you defragged first then ran BCWipe you still should have nothing on the drive. Try something that WILL WORK:

Go to your HDD maker's web site and download the diagnostic utility and "low level format" utility; the LLF may be a function in the diagnostic utility. This "LLF" utility WILL NOT FORMAT anything and WILL NOT HARM your HDD but it will write zeroes to every user accessible sector on the HDD - there will be nothing (accessible) remaining on the HDD after you run the "LLF" utility. After that you will need to partition and format the drive. Run the maker's diagnostic and run scandisk (perform Read/Write surface scan) - at that point you will have a clean HDD and you will have a measure of its condition (write it down in your computer manual and date it)

Hope this Helps,
Henry
