I recently backed up my important information to my main HD (Maxtor 29 gig) to a Maxtor 20 gig (Model number 2B020H1). This was while running Win98 SE. I then formatted my main harddrive (after the backup was disconnected) and installed Windows XP.

When booting up XP with the backup connected it is fine, but when I go to copy the files over, I can get the first 3 or 4 folders (maybe 300 mb out of 7 gig I had on there) and then it says "F:\*filename* is not accessible. Incorrect parameter" or something very very close.

One recovery program failed, but I'm going to try another here shortly. I also thought I heard some clicking...so that's bad. Anyone have any suggestions? Could my problem be as a result of Win98 to WinXP (i.e. would taking the drive to a Win98 machine possibly help?).

I've checked out some of the data recovery websites...but for the prices they charge..youch. I think I want to go another route if possible.

Thanks in advance
-Neil Wilson
