Formatting really does remove everything, however specialist software can retrieve information by 'unformatting' and whilst it is unlikely an individual at a school would go to these lengths you can use a utility that overwrites all the clusters sufficiently that nothing can be recovered, ever. Look on www.windrivers.com site for privacy sofware, you should find something.
