I dont think you can see the wood for the trees mate(migrating ? drives). If you knew how Windows assigned drive letters it would help, it runs like this. Primary,active partition first, then any other primary on the first HDD, then primary on 2/3/4, followed by extended partitions logical drives on 1\2\3\4. last any CD or Zip drives.
If any are not being assigned drive letters there is a good chance they dont have any partitions, primary or otherwise, so use fdisk to create partitions, extended is better since your bootable primary will be active and its easier to assign drive letters for contiguous partitions and drives.
Drives can be migrated to other systems but what you are doing is just installing them.
