: I got a hard drive about 2 months ago. It's a 100gig 7200RPM western digital Internal EIDE. I installed it with out too much trouble, It's installed as primary slave. A day or so ago I was working and the folder names started coming up gibberish in Explorer, I rebooted to see if it would fix it but instead I could not access the drive at all. It appears in the drive listing but when I try and access it I get an error "D:\ in not accessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning" No application can access it. I ran the diagnostics programs that were on the bootable diagnostics diskette that came with the drive. They reported no errors. I would have just tried reformat the drive, but there is about 20gigs of stuff on the drive that I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also when I rebooted I was downloading files from a sharing network to the drive, large video files, I donít know if this could be any part of the problem but thought I should include it just in case.

Are you using a drive overlay like EZ-Drive/EZ-BIOS or does your PC support the 100 GB file? If using drive overlay that could be the problem.

Can you see your files with DOS? If so, recover them ASAP then get into troubleshooting mode.

Good Luck,
