: I'm trying to set up some HDD's pulled from (unix?)networked machines. They include 4 fujitsu ata33 ide's ranging from 3.2 to 4.3 gig, (all sound good), + one WD 4.3 gig ata33 ide. Am using a (utility machine)w/Soyo k7 MB, via, award, onboard i/o controller.

: Run Fdisk large (32bit) w/single partitions, then try Format (from 98se startup/w utilities a: disk)...

: HDD feedback's are all over the map!?! Sizes readout 1 to 2.5 gig. (2) won't format? WinDOS reports odd combinations of reasons why it quites trying to format them.

: 1 or 2 bad hard drives, bummer. But all 5 ?!! beginning to suspect something else going on.

: Q: need good HDD utility that can do deep diagnostic's, scrub the drives, rewrite zero's - then try again clean. Does anyone know a (HDD) website where I can download needed [serious] HDD utilities?

: Or, any clues to this strange behavior would be much appreciatd - till can gather some more data.

: thanks,
: Gerry

You should look for HDD diagnostic and (pseudo) low level format programs (write zeroes to all spots on the HDD) on the HDD maker's web site. Generally not advisable to use other maker's programs - YOUR experimental effort if you do.

Good Luck,
