: Ok, in reading back through many posts, I now realize that my Win98 will only reformat the primary DOS partition, which is set at something like 102Mb. The other 4Gb is showing as an "extended DOS" partition - I assume this is where my NT stuff is.

: FDISK shows both partitions, but when I try to delete the ext dos one it says I first have to delete the "logical" drives, so I try to do that but it tells me there are NO logical drives to delete.

: GRRRR - please help, anyone! I am now officially frustrated.

Suggest that you go to your HDD maker's website and find a (pseudo) low level format program. "LLF" programs write zeroes to every user accessible spot on the HDD - literally erases EVERYTHING. Then partition with fdisk, format it and finally run scandisk THOROUGH SURFACE SCAN just to be sure that you are working with a good HDD. Be careful - I'd put the LLF program on a bootable floppy and disconnect the Win98 HDD; just unplug the power plug for the Win98 HDD.

Good Luck,
