You dont get any option if any boot manager,LILO included, is not the MBR then it wont work.
This is the reason for installing ME first as LILO then reads it and appends it for access, the other way around ie; installing ME second would overwrite the Partition table(which is what we're actually talking about, not the MBR!)and obscure LILO's structure. It is still a useful way of doing it and I still suggest using a proprietry boot manager, in any case.
I dont think the questioner was wanting a detailed technical argument.
