: I downloaded instructions on how to format my hard drive, didnt seem too hard. Did the fdisk, but no choices came up about larger drives. Formatted the disk and now it only reads as 287mb. Attempting to rectify the problem the bios settings were altered. What do I do now?

Suggest that you enter CMOS Setup and SET the HDD parameters (C/H/S) which are probably on the drive - get them from maker's web site if not on the drive and you don't have them on a spec sheet. You should be able to see the full drive capacity with fdisk (after you delete all partitions that you can see).

You may have a boot sector virus ; if so you may be able to kill it (fdisk /mbr).

What OS are you running? win95A and earlier (and their utilities) don't offer "large drive" support. Maximum HDD size for win95A and earlier is 8.4GB and the largest usable partition is 2.1 GB.

Good Luck,
Henry
