Why not install boot manager and let it detect the OS's, it will then boot to BM's new MBR everytime and allow you to choose. You may have run into problems if you only created 1 partition for Linux, it need s one for the OS and a separate one for the swap file, normally it would also install LILO by default, which is the Linux boot manager and so would not have caused you any probs.
