I have the same problem.
the disk is a Maxtor D740-6L.
The problem is, windowsNT installation disks doesn't have an ATA100/133 controller, so the HD disappears during installation.
Try to find a NT disk with the driver of your IDE controller, and when installing, you will see a message "setup is inspecting your hardware". During this message, press F6 several times, and the install software will ask for a disk with the drivers of your IDE controller.
I need a NT driver disk for the IDE controller 82801BA (is a Pentium 4).
