: : what command can I use to remove all information from my hard drive

:
: Depends on how thoroughly you want to remove the info AND whether or not the HDD is password protected.

: If the HDD is password protected you CANNOT access it at all (stolen laptops are USELESS except as doorstops and paperweights).

: If you just want to start afresh you can delete existing partitions (fdisk), make new partition(s), format your drive, load an operating system and apps. This DOES NOT get you an new master boot record unless you run "fdisk /mbr" after you partition and format the drive. This DOES NOT DELETE any files either, merely makes them inaccessible via common methods. The files and data remain on the disk and can be recovered (NOT easy, but possible).

: If you want to ERASE all of the files and information on a HDD go to the HDD maker's web site and find an erase, wipe, low level format (LLF)and/or diagnostic utility package. Run the erase/wipe/LLF utility or equivalent diagnostic function. DO NOT worry about the "low level format" - they DO NOT FORMAT ANYTHING - HDD maker supplied programs merely erase everything (user accessible) on the HDD by overwriting with zeroes. DO NOT use a LLF program from one maker to erase the HDD from a DIFFERENT maker - might work, MIGHT kill your HDD. Experiment at YOUR RISK. This puts the HDD in a state as close to "new" as you can make it (well, you CAN erase it more than once if you like). Partition, format, load the OS and the apps.

: Hope this helps,
: Henry
