I had almost the exact situation as you, only i was running windows 2000 before. I upgraded to Windows xp, and installed it on my 30 gb hard drive, that I had windows on. On my brand new 40 gig, i had installed Mandrake and then took the other 30 gig of it as a big NTFS partition. I bought the drive in Jan, and in mid feb, it just died, xp couldn't boot, etc...i called maxtor after running the diag tools from maxtor, and gave them the error code. they said that XP has been causing this error with their 40, 60, and 80 gigs. they recommend you first do a low level burn with maxtor utilities. if you still get the same error code (its on the quick test that you get this error code) they'll ship you a new one free of charge.

I just recently put xp back on my system now that i have my RAID board installed....hopefully it doesn't kill my new 40 gig (crosses fingers).
